BAHRUDIN BATO ČENGIĆ

Born in 1931 in Maglaj, Bosnia-Herzegovina. He graduated from the University of Sarajevo and acquired additional, specialist education in London. His career in film begun in 1951. Over the years, he collaborated with Aleksandar Petrović, Živojin Pavlović, Veljko Bulajić, John Schlesinger, Nicholas Ray, Anthony Mann, Tony Richardson and Mel Brooks. He was one of the representatives of the so-called black wave of Yugoslav cinema. He was a professor of screenwriting at the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts. He first gained recognition for his documentary films TEN TO ONE (1958) and MAN WITHOUT FACE (1961). His debut feature-length fiction film LITTLE SOLDIERS (1967) screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, while THE ROLE OF MY FAMILY IN THE WORLD REVOLUTION was included in the lineup of the Venice Film Festival. His third fiction feature PICTURES FROM THE LIFE OF SHOCK WORKER (1972) was also screened in Venice. In Yugoslavia, he was considered controversial and was banned from working on film for two decades. It wasn’t until 1983 that he could film his fourth feature HEADS OR TAILS which was followed by SILENT GUNPOWDER in 1991. During the 1992-95 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina he filmed an author’s documentary MONA LISA FROM SARAJEVO. He died in 2007 in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
