THE FIRST OF MAY 1956
Cinematografpher: Stevo Landup, Ognjen Miličević
Music: Zora Branković
Editor: Zora Branković
In its short opening part, the film relies on old photos and posters, as well as recorded testimonies about historic events and figures, to reconstruct the story of workers’ pre-war fight for protection of their labor rights. That story is then linked with contemporary celebrations of May 1 - a holiday which has come to symbolize the fight against capitalism and bourgeoisie. During the revolution, May 1 holiday was celebrated with military victories. In 1956 it is celebrated with a parade joined by members of the army, labor brigades, children and athletes. A rhythmic march by members of labor brigades symbolizes the success of reconstruction. The film closes with shots of a fireworks display.
