Synopsis:

Professor Krstić is a skillful doctor, respected member of society and the manager of a local hospital. He clashes with his son Ranko, also a doctor, over the young man’s insistence on the use of a new, groundbreaking medical procedure. Unable to win his father’s support, doctor Ranko assembles a group of young doctors and they carry out a secret surgery using the new procedure. The surgery saves the life of a patient who had been written off as beyond salvation. Professor Krstić refuses to take the success into account, insisting that the doctors who rebelled be dismissed for failure to follow hospital rules. Ranko is unrepentant, but he finds himself isolated and forced to abandon the hospital. Soon, Doctor Vera invites him to return to the hospital to conduct another surgery with her in which they would again use the new procedure. Ranko accepts the invitation without any hesitation, but it is too late... had the surgery been conducted on time, the life of a young woman would have been saved. As Ranko stands over the body of the patient who died he hears the sound of applause coming for the floor below him. Professor Krstić is celebrating the opening of a new hospital wing that he had been energetically fighting for. Ranko spits the truth in the face of professor Krstić, approaching him not as his father but as a man responsible for the unnecessary loss of a human life.
